It has been reported that New Girl star Hannah Simone will be cast as the lead character in ABC’s latest venture The Greatest American Hero. With New Girl wrapping up its final season in April, Hannah Simone was chosen to play the lead role in the series. She was given the choice of numerous offers before choosing The Greatest American Hero.
Simone will play a 30-year-old Indian-American woman named Meera, who encounters a group of aliens who give her a superhero suit, bestowing her with incredible powers. They entrust her with the task of protecting the planet as she juggles dealing with her traditional Indian-American family while searching for her purpose in life.
ABC has issued a “put pilot” commitment for this series reboot, meaning the network must pay the producers a penalty if the show doesn’t take off.
Although the lead character has been confirmed, no details have been released about the supporting characters yet. Rachna Fruchbom will serve as the scriptwriter and executive producer along with Nahnatchka Khan, Mandy Summers and Tawnia McKiernan. Fruchbom currently writes for ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat, which Nahnatchka Khan also created.
William Katt was the title character in the original series. Katt played a teacher who was tasked with using his superhero suit to save the world. The original series, created by Stephen J. Cannell, aired for three seasons between 1981 and 1984 on ABC. Robert Culp as Bill Maxwell, Connie Sellecca as Pam Davidson and Michael Pare as Tony Villicana also co-starred. The show was popular for its iconic theme song, “Believe It Or Not,” performed by Joey Scarbury and reached the #2 spot on the Billboard 100 singles charts in 1981.
Simone was best known for her role as Jessica’s Day’s best friend Cece Parekh on Fox’s New Girl. New Girl will debut its final season on Tuesday, April 10, and will have just eight episodes, including a one-hour finale. Hannah Simone was born in London, U.K., to an Indian father and a British mother of German, Italian, and Greek Cypriot descent. She recently starred in the indie film Killing Gunther, alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Cobie Smulders
