Star Wars: Episode IX was trouble when it had first announced that Colin Trevorrow would be removed from this movie. The studio then coaxed J. J. Abrams back to direct this movie. In spite of the director being an obvious choice, a few fans are furious.
Matt Vela, a fan created an online petition which demands Lucasfilm to remove Abrams from Star Wars: Episode IX. His argument included the criticism by a few that Force Awakens was a “rip off” of A New Hope. He had then references the studio’s claim that every movie would come from a different director.
This is Vela wrote:
“At the start of the new sequel trilogy, beginning with The Force Awakens, Lucasfilm and Disney promised a new director for each movie to promote a fresh new vision on every installment. With the hiring of J.J. Abrams to direct the upcoming Episode IX, Lucasfilm and Disney have both reneged on this promise.”
“Therefore, to prevent Star Wars Episode IX from becoming yet another rip off of the original trilogy (specifically, a rip off of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi), and for the good of the Star Wars brand, we demand that Kathleen Kennedy replace J.J. Abrams as director of the upcoming Episode 9 film.”
Will this petition have any effect? Mostly not. It has only earned 80 fans. Whatever your feelings are about Abrams’ direction, you can see why the studio wants him back. This would make the story of the trilogy become more like it has made a full circle.
Star Wars: Episode IX will release on December 20th, 2019.
