Actor, Reg E. Cathey Of House of Cards Passes Away

The TV community is now mourning over the loss of a famous actor, Reg E. Cathey. He is well-known for playing the role of Norman Wilson on The Wire and Freddy Hayes on House of Cards. He died at the age of 59 in his New York home and was surrounded by his family and friends. The cause of his death has not yet been confirmed, but a few reports have claimed that he was combating from lung cancer.

Reg E. Cathey was born on August 18, 1958, in Huntsville, Alabama and he spent his childhood in West Germany. After graduating from J.O. Johnson High School, he attended the University of Michigan and the Yale School of Drama.

He made his acting debut in 1984 in A Doctor’s Story, and this was followed up with a guest-starring on Spencer for Hire, and this lead to a string of movie roles in Crossing Delancey, Funny Farm, Penn and Teller Get Killed, Astonished, Me and Him, Loose Cannons, Born on the Fourth of July, Quick Change, What About Bob?, Clear and Present Danger, The Mask, Tank Girl, Airheads, Ill Gotten Gains and Se7en. He as then cast in an episode of Homicide: Life on the Street.

Cathey was the only actor to have gotten a role in every project of his including Homicide: The Movie, The Wire, and The Corner. This is what David Simon said in a statement about this actor:

“Reg Cathey, 1958-2018. Not only a fine, masterful actor, but simply one of the most delightful human beings with whom I ever shared some long days on set. On wit alone, he could double any man over and leave him thinking. Reg, your memory is a great blessing.”

After Homicide: Life on the Street, the actor had been cast in The Corner with movies like Pootie Tang, Head of State and American Psycho. He then went on to star in Oz, S.W.A.T., The Cookout, The Machinist and a few TV shows like Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Lights Out, The Divide and Banshee before he was cast in House of Cards. Reg then won his very first Emmy Award for the role of Freddy. Here is what the creator of House of Cards, Beau Willimon said in his statement:

“Reg Cathey was one of a kind. Brimming with life force, generosity, humor, gravitas and a fountain of talent. Loved by everyone lucky enough know him and work with him. He will be greatly missed. Rest In Peace, Reg.”

Reg E. Cathey had starred as Dr. Franklin Storm in a Fantastic Four reboot, Flock of Four and The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. It is not yet known if the actor has been survived by his children or any other members of his family.
