Could the God of Thunder make making the leap and become the next MI6 agent? Although the producers of the James Bond franchise are secretive as to who would be replacing current James Bond veteran Daniel Craig as 007, following the release of James Bond 25, Chris Hemsworth has expressed interest in playing the coveted role of the British Secret Service spy, should the opportunity arise.
The Australian heartthrob recently sat down to chat on Australian news program Sunrise, following his appearance on the Super Bowl Dundee ad that had everyone convinced that a Crocodile Dundee reboot was on its way. During this conversation, he had been asked about the possibility of donning a tux, picking up a Walther PPK and reprising the role of 007 in the future. Here’s what he had to say about it.
“Yeah, I mean, I think any actor would jump at that opportunity. I’m certainly a fan. A whole lot of pressure comes with that, though. I think the Bond fan base is probably more critical than the comic book fanbase. I don’t know, there’s plenty of guys who could do a better job than I would. Plenty of English men, and women.”
Based on that response it’s clear that he’s open to the idea, although he may not be jumping up and down to get an audition for the inevitable James Bond movie. He did admit that it would be a huge opportunity to play James Bond as he is a big fan. And there are plenty of people who would most likely support this potential casting.
He does point out though that there are plenty of English actors who may be better suited for the role of the British born spy. Many fans have campaigned for his Thor co-star Idris Elba to take on the role for some time now. He also stated that the likelihood of a female Bond isn’t far from reality, though not overly significant at the moment. There has been talk of it with Gillian Anderson from The X-Files.
If he gets this role, Chris Hemsworth would not be the first Aussie actor to play 007. George Lazenby, who famously played 007 once in “On Her Majesty’s Secret Service”, was also Australian. He was also the first person to play Bond in a movie aside from Sean Connery. James Bond 25 will not arrive until November 2019 and this means that a new actor will not be cast until 2020.
