The latest Black Lightning episode featured a favorite of DC Comics fans, and also revealed a highly enticing name in the process.
Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for the latest Black Lightning episode, “LaWanda: The Book of Burial.”
The new episode had Anissa Pierce/Thunder (Nafessa Williams), trying to find out the reality of her powers. Which necessitated a visit to the local bookstore, where she met Grace Choi (Chantal Thuy), a bartender at a club nearby. They start talking, partly due to the interest generated by Grace’s Outsiders comic book.
Grace invited Anissa to attend a cosplay party at the club, where patrons could dress up as their preferred superhero. Grace suggests some names such as Looker (a vampire type member of the Outsiders) and Supergirl.
If you have been following The CW’s DC Comics-based shows, then this is quite an interesting point. Melissa Benoist has been playing the TV version of Supergirl for last three years, initially on CBS and now on The CW’s Arrowverse.
Since Black Lightning is not included in the Arrowverse, the name-dropping of Supergirl gives it a great twist, and fans are bound to wonder how can Supergirl exist in the Black Lightning universe. It is possible that various DC Comics titles are shown to have been published in Black Lightning’s world, thus, the conversation between Anissa and Grace might mean that Supergirl is only a fictional character for them.
At the same time, it can’t be ruled out that there is a Supergirl in the Black Lightning universe because various other superheroes are expected to be. That might also be in sync with The CW’s common rules, which imply that there is a Supergirl on each of the DC Comics’ Earth.
Despite Black Lightning not truly crossing over with the Arrowverse, a scenario which is unlikely in the near future, this reference to Supergirl might create a base for an entertaining cameo later in the show, and that’s something which one of the stars from the series has already expressed interest in.
“If I could pick one character from the DC universe to come on the show, it would be Supergirl,” Christine Adams had mentioned last month. “I’d love to see her in the show just because I think we are — really, this show is about the girls. That’s ultimately where we want to take it. We want young women to feel empowered, so it feels like Supergirl would be a really good fit. I’d love to see the three of them together, kicking some butt.”
You can watch Black Lightning on Tuesdays at 9/8c on The CW.
