The passion of the Christ sequel has got a tentative title The Resurrection, and it is really going to be made. James Caviezel, the actor who portrayed Jesus Christ in the original film, has joined the cast to reprise his role. The first time we heard about a The Passion of the Christ sequel was towards the end of 2016 during Mel Gibson’s promotion of Hacksaw Ridge, which gave a new lease of life to the director’s career. There hasn’t been any more noise since then, but, apparently, Mel Gibson has started putting things in place, and the sequel is progressing.
Jim Caviezel was interviewed recently regarding his upcoming film Paul, Apostle of the Christ, in which he is playing the character of Luke. He was questioned about The Resurrection, and he acknowledged being a part of it. Although he wasn’t able to reveal any story details, he stated that it would be “the biggest film in history.” This is what Caviezel had said on the subject.
“There are things that I cannot say that will shock the audience. It’s great … I won’t tell you how he’s going to go about it, but I’ll tell you this much, the film he’s going to do is going to be the biggest film in history. It’s that good.”
The original Passion of the Christ was made on a small budget of $30 million, and it went on to make $611 million worldwide. Among R-rated films, only Deadpool has earned more than that. The Passion of the Christ is still the highest-grossing R-rated film in Us domestic market, earning $370.8 million. Caviezel adds, “Braveheart, that’s a film that took a long time to be able to crack. The same thing for Passion. And the same thing for this. He’s finally got it. So that is coming.” During a 2016 interview, Mel Gibson had said the following about his sequel plans, which according to him would be titled The Resurrection.
“Of course, that is a huge undertaking. And you know, it’s not the ‘Passion 2.’ It’s called ‘The Resurrection.’ Of course, that’s a very big subject, and it needs to be looked at because we don’t want to just do a simple rendering of it – you know, read what happened. But in order to read it, experience and explore probably deeper meanings of what it’s about, it’s going to take some doing, and Randall Wallace is up to the task. He is also, as well as a brilliant writer; he is a great director. He directed ‘We Were Soldiers’ and ‘Heaven Is For Real’ and stuff. So, he is a good writer and director.”
Randall Wallace had written the first Passion of the Christ released in 2004, and he has experience of working with Mel Gibson earlier. As of now, there is no schedule announced for The Resurrection, but, once Gibson had said that the sequel would depict Christ in hell. Either way, as per this interview with USA Today, the Passion of the Christ sequel is on its way and those associated with the project seem to be quite confident about the story. We will share further details with you as soon as they emerge.
