The Last Jedi is decimating the box office, and the fans are in debates on if Rian Johnson has ruined the movie or made it a better Star Wars movie. The discussions are very heated, and a few fans have pointed out that those who had criticized The Force Awakens for being too familiar say that The Last Jedi is too different. Supreme Leader Snoke’s role is one that is being spoken about as well. Rian Johnson has now broken the silence about this.
Before The Last Jedi released, fans had expected to find out who Supreme Leader Snoke is and his story. But Rian Johnson was not very interested in telling this as he thought it would drag this movie down. Johnson has revealed that his purpose of Snoke was to break down KyloRen and to, later on, redeem him and this would set up Star Wars 9.
He had this to say:
“When I was working on the character of Kylo, I came to a place where I thought the most interesting thing would be to knock the shaky foundation out from under him at the beginning of this movie. By the end of this film, he’s gone from being a wannabe Vader to someone who is standing on his own feet as a complex villain taking the reins.”
Rian Johnson took lots of risks with his movie and killed Snoke without warning. Johnson said it would be a setup for the next movie.
“But then the question is: What place would Snoke have at the end of that? That made me realize the most interesting thing would be to eliminate that dynamic between the ’emperor’ and pupil so that all bets are off going into the next one. That also led to the possibility of this dramatic turn in the middle, which could also be a really powerful connection point between Kylo and Rey.”
KyloRen was an immature character in The Force Awakens, and he is still growing and has a thirst for power. If the time jump for Episode IX is true, we will see a full villain in KyloRen. This would not happen until Snoke goes.
We hope that Snoke’s backstory will be explored further in Star Wars 9. Star Wars fans will never be fully happy with any movie. And they feel that Snoke’s character and Rey’s parents proved to be unimportant for the plot, and this is the biggest curveballs that Johnson has delivered.
