Fans of video games can surely rejoice as Mega Man is making its grand return. The Blue Bomber was the most important characters of the 8-bit gaming era, with Mega Man games being must-have games for an NES owner’s library. With the fiendish boss battles and platforming, the franchise was a strong foothold for Capcom on consoles.
Over the years, the power of Mega Man slipped away, with the highs of the NES and SNES eras dwindling as spin-offs such as Mega Man X and Mega Man Battle Network took priority. After a short resurrection of original games with Mega Man 9 and 10 in 2008 and 2010, it seems like the series was once again dormant. And now, Mega Man 11 has been announced.
Mega Man 11 has been revealed by Capcom as part of its Mega Man 30th anniversary celebration. Taking on a 2.5D design direction, this game will be released for PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The game is scheduled to launch in 2018. With the announcement, Capcom shared a debut trailer for the game.
Capcom said that Mega Man 11 is handled by a veteran development team. The Mega Man franchise has a long and impressive history, and although the recent mobile ports of the games have not gone over too well, there is hope after the solid Mega Man Legacy collections. If Mega Man pulls off more of the platform action, then players will be happy and it will be even better if the developers hide some great Mega Man secrets in the game.
The move to release another Mega Man game makes sense from Capcom’s perspective. This year marks the 30th anniversary of the launch of the first Mega Man. Gamers have shown that the appetite for classic games is very high.
There are bound to be doubts about the game after the unfulfilled promises of Mega Man successor Mighty No. 9. If Capcom can show the same attention that Sega had shown with Sonic Mania, there is no reason that Mega Man will not be a success.
