Get Ready To Binge: Netflix Is Coming Up With 80 Original Films In 2018
Our TV viewing underwent a revolution with the arrival of Netflix which has brought to us original content ranging from Stranger Things to House of Cards and now it wants to redefine the way we watch movies too. The streaming service is embarking on a major mission to showcase a huge volume of original movies in 2018.
The current year saw Netflix release almost 50 original films which comprised of comedies, drama, action, anime, international movies and even documentaries. However, the number is going to skyrocket in 2018.
Netflix Is Gearing Up To Release 80 Original Films In 2018
Variety reports that Netflix is betting on ramping up. Netflix made a recent announcement about increasing prices to generate funds for the approximately $8 billion it plans to spend on original content which is much higher than the earlier projections of $6 billion. While the Netflix users might not consider it to be the best option to watch original movies, however, its chief content officer Ted Sarandos told investors on Monday that this will change shortly:
“I think people will start seeing the potential for this original movie initiative that it could be done on the enormous scale we have on the television side.”
The films will not only cater to different genres but, they also belong to various budget categories ranging from “indie’ films to huge blockbusters. For example, we have the Netflix film Bright which has a budget of $90 million and stars Will Smith. The film is scheduled to release just before holidays on December 22.
2019 will see the release of the most expensive Netflix film till date; the Martin Scorcese directed The Irishman which stars Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino. This could push Netflix as a competitor to the leading film studios, just the way it has become a major competitor to top TV networks.
Will Disney’s Departure Hurt Netflix? They Don’t Think So!
A large number of Netflix users are dismayed with the Disney decision to leave Netflix totally to launch their own streaming service in 2019. Disney’s reasons are understandable as they have ample material as well as the confidence to launch their exclusive streaming service.
Till date, Disney has been the source of some of the most loved films on Netflix which include titles from Marvel, Star Wars as well as Pixar. Therefore, we wonder whether Netflix can recover from such a huge jolt?Sarandos gave a convincing answer to this:
“We just have to focus on creating content that our members can’t live without… Whether or not one of our partners decides to produce for us or compete with us, that’s really a choice that they have to make based on their own business.”
Although this answer might be a little secretive, Sarandos is not wrong. There are so many options to stream the beloved films and TV shows. Therefore, the best way to be the leader is to produce original content that fans can’t miss nor can they get elsewhere. Can anyone live without Netflix? Canceling Netflix means losing out on Stranger Things, The Defenders, various Marvel Shows, 13 Reasons Why, House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Narcos and so much more.
Since now Netflix is making films too, it is going to be even more difficult to cancel the subscription, and that’s what Netflix is counting on.
